Recently the FDA found that 4 out of 5 supplements offered at GNC, Target, Walgreens and Walmart didn't contain the ingredients that they list on the label and instead, contain cheap fillers like ground up house plants, soy powder and rice powder. This is dangerous for people with allergies and fucked up for everyone else.

What is a Nutritional supplement?
A nutritional supplement is like a cherry on top of a cake. If you have not gathered up all of the cake ingredients (healthy diet foundation), baked the cake (created a healthy lifestyle) and frosted the cake (sustained that lifestyle) then a cherry (supplement) is a waste of money.
Are you following me? Supplements are products that contains vitamins, minerals, enzymes, botanicals and/or other ingredients. It is intended to complete or enhance your current diet.
Supplements are not a stand alone fix all type of thing.
Money saving tip: Supplements have a shelf life of about 6 months, so if you are the type of person that keeps a 1 month supply of multivitamins in your cabinet for a year... maybe, stop wasting your money until you can commit to taking them every day.
Sadly, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) considers them a food, not a drug.
Which means that most conventional supplements are poorly regulated.
I have had a lot of experience with supplements, some amazing, like the one that made my skin look like a bronze statue, and some experiences not so good, like the time I got a terrible face rash and my throat started closing up (unregulated supplements from India... opps).
So, what is a supplement?
4 must haves for a product to qualify as a supplement:
How are Nutritional Supplements Regulated?
Very poorly if at all.
Supplements are considered innocent until proven guilty or safe until proven unsafe.
Because the FDA considers them a food, they do not have to go through screening or testing like prescription drugs do.
The manufacture of the supplement is responsible for ensuring that a product is safe before it goes to market.
To me, it's no surprise that some big companies cut corners to make a quick buck.
The FDA is responsible for taking action if the supplement is unsafe after it has gone to market... How do they find out if it is unsafe? well, unassuming people buy these products, they have divers side effects and so an investigation starts.
Don't worry, there are great companies out there looking out for us. One of them is The Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). They regulate preparation, packaging and holding of supplements to ensure their safety.
However, this is not mandatory and they do not regulate what goes into the supplement.

To Wrap it all Up...
Supplements are the cherry on top of the cake. Make the Cake first in order to get the most out of your supplements and avoid wasting money.
Supplements are poorly regulated, so it is important to research a company and make sure they have your best interest in mind when developing a product.
Use the checklist above and invest a little bit of your time into finding a company that you trust.
I have spent $1,000's on supplements and endless hours researching quality companies and I can say without a doubt that Design for Health surpases the highest standards in the supplement industry and that is why I have reached out to them as a health practitioner.
I am honored to be able to work with Design for Health. This is where I buy my supplements and where I recommend my clients buy theirs. They work with holistic health practitioners like myself to get their products into the hands of people that demand quality.
If you want to get the best bang for your buck you can go check them out. Yes, they are a little pricer than what you will find at Walgreens or Walmart, but that is because they are committed to the highest quality farming, extraction, manufacturing, storing and distribution which all equals potency and effectiveness.
I think it is worth investing in one quality multivitamin for $47 a month that I know is helping me out. Over throwing away $100 every month on a couple of bottles of cheap, poorly regulated ground up house plants and rice.
